Dave Bompart, affectionately known as Big Dave, lost his life on February 2, 2012. He had spent the last 2 years of his life helping the victim of Haiti's 2010 earthquake. He was deeply involved with the Project Medishare that is based out of Miami. His latest project involved helping to build an orphanage. Last week, he was shot and robbed on his way from the bank in Port-au-Prince. He was flown to Jackson Memorial Hospital and doctors worked feverishly to save his life. Sadly, he did not survive. Though he has passed on, his wife hopes to continue to help the community in Haiti because that is what he would have wanted.
His memorial service will be held on Feb 5, 2012 in Miami. He will be buried in Ohio.
This is one story that really struck a chord with me. He was just trying to help a country that needs so much and some brainless criminal decided to snuff the life out of him. This type of action makes others less willing to go help out in these countries. I'm very certain the money could have been taken without shooting him. Better yet, the person should not have robbed him at all. I feel so sorry for his wife because not only did she lose her husband, but someone in the hospital decided to steal her laptop. Hopefully others will not get discouraged and continue to give help to the people of Haiti.
